Beyond the Snapshot: Wildlife Photography Workshop

Saturday, August 22, 2026
9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Harriman State Park, Boys' House, 3489 Green Canyon Rd., Island Park, ID 83429

Celebrate the Wild Through Your Lens.

Come spend the day learning from two talented photographers, sharpening your skills, and discovering how thoughtful wildlife photography can deepen our connection to nature and support conservation. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to take your wildlife photography to the next level, join Harriman State Park and Henrys Fork Wildlife Alliance for a fun, hands-on workshop led by acclaimed photographers Tracy River of Tracy Dean River Photography and Jeff Pedersen of Red Cliffs Photography.

Throughout the day, you’ll learn practical techniques for creating more compelling wildlife photographs while exploring how ethical photography can help protect wildlife and inspire conservation. After a morning classroom session, you’ll put your new skills into practice on a guided walk along Harriman State Park’s beautiful Ranch Loop Trail.

Workshop Schedule

9:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Classroom instruction at Boys’ House, Harriman State Park
12:00 – 1:00 PM: Picnic lunch (please bring your own lunch)
1:00 – 3:00 PM: Guided photography walk on the Ranch Loop Trail

All experience levels are welcome! You don’t need an expensive camera to participate. DSLR and mirrorless cameras are great, but point-and-shoot cameras and even smartphones can capture incredible images. The most important thing is a desire to learn and have fun.

Before You Arrive

To help you get the most from the workshop, we recommend spending a few minutes becoming familiar with how to locate and adjust these camera settings (if your camera has them):

  • Autofocus mode (single or continuous)
  • Autofocus area mode
  • Shutter release mode
  • ISO and Auto ISO
  • Exposure metering
  • Exposure mode (Program, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, or Manual)
  • White balance

Camera menu names vary by manufacturer, so don’t worry if yours looks a little different.
