Vault toilets are an essential part of recreation infrastructure on public lands. They make remote camping, hiking, and fishing possible while protecting water quality and landscapes.
But, small design details can have unintended consequences. Open vent pipes on vault toilets can become a fatal trap for cavity-nesting birds who enter looking for a safe nesting space but instead fall down the pipe into a poo-filled vault. These birds become trapped and perish if not rescued. Because these restrooms are widespread across campgrounds and trailheads, these mortalities add up over time. Installing vent screens is a practical way to align recreation infrastructure with wildlife conservation efforts. Please help us purchase vent screens for the Ashton-Island Park Ranger District and save native birds!
